    Grandma's Hot Water Gingerbread

    This is one of the very first things I learned to cook. It's from my Grandmother's 1929


    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup molasses
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 2 eggs
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
    • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
    • 1teaspoon cinnamon
    • 2 teaspoons soda
    • 1 cup boiling water


    Instructions


    1. Mix ingredients in order listed, dissolving soda in boiling water. Bake in a shallow pan (13

    Final Comments


    Although the recipe calls for shortening, I have used butter or margerine for many years and prefer it.
