2 C raw, whole rye
4 C water

Soak the rye in the water, or soup stock, for 3 hours. Add one teaspoon salt if not using the soup stock.
Simmer until tender and all the liquid is absorbed. (it may be necessary to add more liquid.)
Var; substitute wheat for rye.
