Cherry Cheese Bread
List of Ingredients
2 cups flour
2 packages yeast -- (2 tablespoons)
1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 teaspoons salt
1 package cream cheese -- (8 oz)
1/4 cup sugar
1 pound cherry pie filling (can)
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
1/2 cup walnuts -- chopped
Mix flour and yeast together in bowl. Heat next 4 ingredients just so shortening is melted. Add to dry mixture. Add 3 eggs and beat for 1/2 minutes at low speed, 3 minutes on high. By hand, stir in enough flour to make a moderately stiff dough (2-3 cups). Turn out on floured counter to knead. Knead 5-8 minutes. Shape into ball. Place into lightly greased bowl turning once to grease surface. Cover and let rise in warm oven until double (1 hour). Punch down. Let rest for 10 minutes. Divide dough in half. Roll each to 15x6" rectangle. Place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet. While dough is rising, mix cream cheese and sugar together. Spread this mixture down center of each half of dough. Spread 1/2 can cherry pie filling down center of dough leaving 1 1/2 -2 inches on each side. Sprinkle with orange peel and walnuts. Cut strips 2 " long, 1/2 inch apart. Crisscross strips over filling. Let rise 30 minutes. Bake at 375 for 20 minutes until golden brown. Dribble sugar glaze and walnuts over top.
This is a great treat on Christmas morning.
