    Cheryl's Buttermilk Scones

    List of Ingredients

    3 cups flour
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup sugar
    3/4 cup butter
    1/2 cup chopped walnuts
    1/2 cup dried fruit - currants, raisins, etc.
    1 cup buttermilk
    1/2 cup orange juice
    18 sugar cubes


    Preheat oven to 400 deg. Sift together dry ingredients and cut in butter. Stir in dried fruit and walnuts. Make well in center, pour in buttermilk and mix quickly into round ball. Place on floured board andpat into 3/4" thick circle. Cut into rounds. Place on parchment lined cookie sheet. Take 1 sugar cube soaked in orange juice (I use 1/2 cube) and press into center of each scone. Brush with cream or milk (or you may use egg wash). Bake for 14-18 minutes. Serve warm with Devonshire Cream (see recipe under sauces) and jam.
