In a medium size saucepan, stir together 1 cup cornstarch and 2 cups (1 lb.
    box) baking soda.
Pour in 1 1/2 cups cold water and blend until smooth.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a boil, starts to thicken, reaches the consistency of slightly dry mashed potatoes, and holds its shape.

Turn mixture onto a plate and cover with a damp cloth to cool.

When cool enough to handle, knead on a surface dusted with cornstarch until clay is soft and pliable.
Store in a plastic bag or in a container with a tightly fitting cover.

Makes enough for about 20 ornaments.

Shape the ornaments and place a dried bean in the top of each ornament.

Place the ornaments on wax paper and dry them for about 8 hours at room temperature, turning occasionally for even drying.

When dry, remove the beans (hole remains for hanging).

Paint the ornaments with tempera paint and seal them with plastic spray, clear nail polish or shellac.
