    List of Ingredients

    2 teaspoons Yeast
    1/2 teaspoon Sugar
    1 cup Milk
    1 teaspoon Mixed spice
    1 cup Currants or raisins
    1 tablespoon Candied peel -- chopped
    1 tablespoon Melted butter
    3 cups Flour
    1/3 cup Almonds -- ground
    1/3 cup Sugar
    1 large Egg yolk
    1 teaspoon Lemon juice


    Warm the milk to lukewarm and add the yeast and sugar. Mix the flour and spice into a bowl and add the yeast mixture. Mix together to form a dough.
    cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Gradually work in the fruit and the melted butter. Knead and rol out to an oblong 10 x 5. Mix the almond paste ingredients to form a firm paste.Roll this into a long sausage shape and place on the rolled out dough. Roll the dough around the almond paste forming the join at the bottom. Glaze with milk and put on a greased baking sheet. Allow to rise till double. Bake 400 for 10 minutes then decrease heat to 325 back 45 minutes more or until evenly golden brown. Allow to cool and serve sliced with plenty of butter.
