    Recipe Introduction

Yom Kippur is also called the Day of Atonement. This observance always comes eight days after Rosh Hashanah. The mood turns from festive to somber as a day of fasting from both food and drink begins in recognition of the past year's sins. After fasting, many gather with family and friends at sunset to "break the fast." Light dairy or breakfast foods are common.

    List of Ingredients

    16 oz. cream cheese, softened
    16 oz. farmer cheese
    2 large eggs
    1/4 C. sugar
    2 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
1/2 C. butter or margarine, softened
    1/4 C. sugar
    2 large eggs
    3/4 C. milk
    1 1/4 C. all-purpose flour
    1 tsp. baking powder

    Recipe

Beat first 5 ingredients at low speed with electric mixer; set cheese mixture aside. Beat butter and 1/4 cup sugar at medium speed until fluffy. Add 2 eggs and milk, mixing well. Combine flour and baking powder; stir into butter mixture. Pour half of butter mixture into a greased 11 x 7-inch baking dish. Spoon cheese mixture on top, and pour remaining butter mixture over cheese mixture. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes. Yields 8 to 10 servings.

NOTE: The baked casserole may be frozen. To serve, thaw in refrigerator, and bake at 350F for 20 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
