    1/2 cup shortening
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    3 eggs
    1 ounce red food coloring
    2 tablespoons cocoa
    2 1/ cups flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 cup buttermilk
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1 tablespoon vinegar
    1 teaspoon soda

    icing for red velvet cake
    2 cups milk
    6 tablespoons plain flour
    pinch salt
    4 sticks butter
    2 cups sugar
    2 teaspoons vanilla


    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix shortening, sugar and eggs. cream together, then add red food coloring, 2 tablespoons cocoa, flour , salt, buttermilk. Add vanilla, Mix together vinegar and soda: fold into the other mixture. Do not beat after adding vinegar and soda to mixture. Grease and flour two 8- or 9- inch pans Bake in 350 degree oven 20 to 30 minutes.

    combine milk, flour, and salt. cook, stirring constantly until thick. cool thoroughly. cream butter and sugar with mixer for 7 minutes . add first three ingredients gradually. beat until fluffy. add vanilla. spread over cake.
