Bacon or salt pork
Corn meal
� Cook bacon or salt pork in a frying pan to draw out the fat.
� Extract the meat.
� Mix fat with water and corn meal into a dough.
� Fry in the pan or wrap the dough around a ramrod and hold over the fire till it bakes.

This soldier�s recipe from the Civil War was called �cush� or �slosh.� No doubt the man who inspired terror in the hearts of Yankees in Loudoun, John S. Mosby, the �Gray Ghost� of the Confederacy, tasted it more than once over the campfire.
