    Date Bars from Grandma's Kitchen

    Source of Recipe

    My own

    Recipe Introduction

As far back as I can remember, my Grandmother made these on special occasions, or just because. And my mother always made them, too. They are just so good and really full of dates , just the way I like them.

    List of Ingredients

    CRUST INGREDIENTS
    1 3/4 cups oatmeal
    1 1/2 cups flour
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp baking soda
    3/4 cup butter, melted
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/2 tsp salt
    DATE FILLING
    1 lb chopped dates
    3/4 cup sugar
    1 cup water
    1 Tbs butter
    1 tsp vanilla
    1 cup chopped walnut

    Recipe

1 To make the filling: Boil the dates, sugar, and water until thick, about 5-10 minutes.
2 Add 1 TBSP butter, the vanilla, and the walnuts.
3 Set aside to cool a bit.
4 To prepare the crust: Combine all dry ingredients with the melted butter.
5 Press half of the mixture into a lightly greased 13 x 9 pan.
6 Cover with filling mixture and top with remaining half of crust mixture.
    7 Press lightly.
8 Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
9 Please bake NO LONGER THAN THAT!
10 Cut into squares when COMPLETELY cool(this is really important--they'll fall apart if you cut them while still warm).

    Yield: 25-30 squares
    Preparation time: 20 minutes
    Ready in: 45 minutes
