    THE Best Brownies

My mom made these for us when I was a kid. I used this recipe the first time I made somthing all by myself; I think I was 10 years old. Now my kids enjoy them.

    List of Ingredients

    • 6 TBS cocoa
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 3/4 cup flour
    • 1/2 tsp. baking flour
    • 1/2 tsp. salt
    • 1/2 cup favorite nuts (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Melt cocoa and shortening over low heat, stirring to mix.(My mom used to use chocolate baking squares, but I keep cocoa on hand for hot chocolate, I don't buy the squares.) Set aside to cool slightly.(You don't want scrambled eggs when you add it to the mixing bowl.)
    2. In separate mixing bowl, combine sugar and eggs.
    3. Add chocolate mixture (It can still be warm, just not hot) to eggs stirring as you pour.
    4. Combine dry ingredients and mix thoroughly with chocolate.
    5. Grease bottom only of 8" square pan. I use vegetable spray to save some on calories (I know that sounds silly, but in the mind, in makes sense!). Greasing the sides, expecially the corners, makes the brownies hard along the edges; just spray the bottom.
    6. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. The top will have a dull crust; and a slight imprint will be left if touched.
    7. Recipe can be doubled. Garnish with powdered sugar sifted through a wire mesh strainer if desired.
