    List of Ingredients


    • 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, broken into pieces
    • 1/2 C. water, boiling
    • 1/2 C. shortening
    • 2 C. light brown sugar, packed
    • 2 lrg. eggs, separated
    • 2 C. unbleached flour
    • 2 tsp. baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    • 1/2 tsp. sea salt
    • 1/2 C. water
    • 1 C. walnuts, chopped
    • 1 tsp. pure vanilla


    Instructions


    1. Separate eggs and put whites into a mixing bowl in the icebox.

    2. Boil water and remove from heat. put in chocolate pieces and melt, leave to cool.
    3. Cream shortening and brown sugar. Beat in egg yolks and chocolate mixture. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and sea salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Mix well. Beat in water, nuts and vanilla. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form then fold into cake batter. Bake in a greased 13x9 inch pan at 350 degrees F. for 35-40 minutes or until cake pick tests done.
