Ice box, Date Pinwheels

List of Ingredients
1/4 pound butter
1 3-oz pkg cream cheese
1/4 C sugar
1 egg
2 1/2 C sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 T lemon juice
1 T grated lemon rind
Filling;
1 pound chopped dates
1/4 C sugar
1/4 C water
Recipe
Cook the filling ingredients over low heat for 20 minutes or until very thick. Set aside to cool.
Cream butter with cream cheese until very smooth and soft. Work the sugar in until fluffy. Stir in slightly beaten eggs. Sift dry ingredients together and mix with the creamed mixture thoroughly. Add lemon juice and rind. Divide dough in 1/2 and roll each, on a lightly floured board, into rectangles, 1/4 inch thick. Spread top with date filling, roll up as for a jelly roll. Wrap in waxed paper and chill several hours. Slice 1/4 inch thick and bake at 375 degrees about 12 minutes.
Makes 3 dozen.
