    HAND FORMED, THUMBPRINT COOKIES

    List of Ingredients

    1/4 C packed brown sugar
    1/4 C butter, softened
    1/8 C shortening
    1/8 C butter
    1 egg, separated
    1/2 tsp. vanilla
    1 C all purpose flour
    1/4 tsp. salt
    3/4 C finely chopped nuts (opt)
    Fruit preserves


    Recipe


    Mix brown sugar, butter, egg yolk, shortening and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Shape into 1" balls. Beat egg white slightly. Dip balls in egg white, roll in nuts. Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Press thumb deeply in center of each. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until light brown. Remove from cookie sheet, cool and fill thumbprints with jelly.

    Variation. Add two tablespoons poppy seeds to the dough
