    List of Ingredients

    1 2/3 cups flour
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup cocoa -- baking type
    1/2 cup shortening -- softened
    1 cup milk
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    3 eggs

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 8 or 9-inch layer pans or an oblong 9 x 13-inch cake pan.

    Combine dry ingredients. Add shortening, milk and vanilla. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed on mixer or 300 vigorous strokes by hand. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl frequently. Add eggs. Beat 2 minutes more, scraping bowl frequently. Pour into pan (s). Bake 8 inch layers about 38 minutes; 9 inch layers about 30 minutes; oblong about 45 minutes.

    Frost with favorite brown sugar or chocolate icing.
