    Ed Sullivan's Bread Pudding

    2 cups bread crumbs
    3 cups scalded milk
    1 whole egg
    2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
    1/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla
    currant jelly
    nutmeg
    meringue - 2 egg whites, 1/4 cup sugar

    Recipe




    Put the bread crumbs in an ungreased 1 1/2 quart casserole. Then add beaten egg yolk and the whole egg, sugar, vanilla and the scaled milk. Mix thoroughly. Sprinkle with nutmeg and set casserole in a pan of hot water about an inch deep. Bake in a moderate (350) oven until silver knife inserted one inch from the edge comes out clean (about an hour). Remove from oven and spread currant jelly over pudding. Cover with meringue made of egg whites and sugar. Return to oven for about 15 minutes until meringue is browned. Cool 20 to 30 minutes before serving.
