    Yankee Apples with Sauce

    List of Ingredients




    for the filling part:

    6 sliced tart apples, (Granny Smith)
    1/3 c. sugar
    3/4 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    1/8 tsp. + 3/4 tsp. salt, separated
    2 c. flour
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 c. shortening
    2/3 c. milk

    for the sauce:

    2 c. boiling water
    1 c. sugar
    2 tbsp. flour
    2 tsp. salt
    1/4 tsp. cinnamon or nutmeg
    1 tbsp. butter
    1 tbsp. vinegar

    Recipe



    Preheat oven to 425. Need an 8x8x2" baking pan.

    for the filling part:

    Place the sliced apples in the bottom of the baking pan.
    Mix the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and the 1/8 tsp. salt together and sprinkle over the apples.
    Stir together the flour, the 3/4 tsp salt, and baking powder.
    Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles cornmeal, then add the milk.
    Knead lightly.
    Place over top of the apples.
    Bake for 25 minutes.

    for the sauce:

    Add the sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon to the boiling water.
    Add the butter and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
    Add the vinegar and stir well.
    Pour over the Yankee Apples.
    Makes 8 servings.
