    1/2 cup CRISCO all-vegetable shortening or 1/2 CRISCO Stick
    3/4 cup sugar
    2 eggs
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    2 cups sifted flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup buttermilk
    1 cup chopped pecans
    1 jar (10 ounces) maraschino cherries, drained and chopped (1 cup)

    Confectioners Icing
    1 tablespoon milk
    1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
    1/4 teaspoon vanilla

    Preheat oven to 350�F. In bowl, cream Crisco and sugar till light. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, soda, and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture, mixing well. Fold in nuts and cherries. Turn into a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan. Bake at 350�F for 55 to 60 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pan. Cool thoroughly. If desired, glaze with Confectioners Icing.

    Confectioners Icing
    Add enough milk (about 1 tablespoon) to 1/2 cup confectioners sugar (sift if lumpy) till desired consistency. Add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla. Stir to blend well.

    Makes 1 loaf
