    • 4 cups flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2/3 cup shortening
    • 4 eggs
    • 3 cups sugar
    • 2 cups chopped walnuts
    • 2 cups mashed bananas
    • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • Frosting:
    • 1 (8 ounce) and 1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
    • 3/4 cup butter, softened
    • 1 (16 ounce) box powdered sugar


    Instructions


    1. Combine shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk, adding to creamed mixture with flour, baking powder, salt and bananas. Add nuts last. Pour into three 9 inch greased and floured baking pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool layers on wire rack.
    2. To prepare frosting, cream butter and cream cheese until well blended. Add powdered sugar and beat until smooth. Frost between layers, top and sides of cake.
